Takamura Hamono is based in Echizen, Japan — one of the most storied knife-making regions in the country — and has built a reputation for producing knives of exceptional thinness and precision at prices that consistently surprise serious cooks. Migaki means polished in Japanese, and the name reflects the refined, clean aesthetic of this line. These are purpose-built precision tools, not rustic character pieces, and the Petty 130mm is one of the finest expressions of that philosophy in the lineup.
At the core of this knife is SG2 — also known as R2 — a powdered metallurgy stainless steel that represents a significant step up from conventional stainless alloys. The extremely fine, uniform grain structure produced by the powdered metallurgy process allows SG2 to take an acutely keen edge and hold it through extended use in ways that conventional steels simply cannot match. Hardened to 62 HRC, the blade is clad in softer stainless for added durability and finished to a mirror polish throughout. At 131mm with a 29mm blade height and a spine measuring just 1.4mm, this is a true laser in petty format — featherlight at 2.2 oz, precise, and exceptionally comfortable for in-hand work, detail tasks, fruit prep, and anything where control matters more than raw cutting power. The rosewood Western handle is well fitted and comfortable.
What Customers Are Saying:
Customers who already own other Takamura knives consistently add this petty to complete the set — and it delivers the same laser performance in a smaller format. It has become a daily go-to for home cooks handling fruit, vegetables, and smaller prep tasks, and earns high praise for its out-of-the-box sharpness, long-term edge retention, and the quality of fit and finish that punches well above its price point. One customer has owned this knife for five years and reports it is still going strong.
Care Instructions:
SG2 is a stainless steel but its hardness makes it more susceptible to chipping than softer alloys. Use on wood or rubber cutting boards only and avoid hard materials, bones, and frozen foods. Hand wash and dry promptly after use. Sharpen on quality water stones and strop regularly to maintain the keen edge between full sharpenings.

5 years later and still going strongPosted By: Mike Hansen

This knife and the Takamura Migaki Santoku were both purchased 5 years ago. I was hesitant to purchase for two reasons. First, while I read very good things about R-2/SG2 powdered Stainless metallurgy, I am a long time fan of carbon Steel knives and secondly was the low price point of these knives.
That being said, I really wanted to try out this steel and the price made the risk worthwhile. CKTG also has a great return policy which mitigated my risk even further. Upon receipt of the two knives, I was immediately pleasantly impressed. The F&F was absolutely outstanding and the knives were too sharp to preclude further sharpening.
When I put the knives to the test, I found that they were well balanced, a pleasure to use, and held their edge for a long, long time. When I finally felt the need to sharpen them, I also found that they sharpened up easily and extremely well. So the bottom line - stainless steel (easier to maintain), comes with a stellar sharpness, holds the edge for a long time, sharpens easily and well, and the price point is frosting on an outstanding piece of cake(kit).
5 years later and they still represent a great investment. Worth every penny and then some. Mark and Susan job well done on discovering this blacksmith.

Super sharp laser. It is the wifes go to knife for everyday fruits veggies etc. I also have the 210. The R2 works well for the wife. I got tired of cleaning the rust off of Tojiro 120mm Petty which we was here favorite before we got the 130 Takamura. Similar profile..

What can i say? I bought the 180mm, then the 210. For the price these knives rock! I added the 130 not only because it was a size I lacked but I knew the laser sharpness would be there. This knife, just like the other two definitely delivers.

Received the knife today (CKTG service is excellent by the way). I have long wanted to explore R2 materials and a cladded knife and this was a great opportunity to do just that. Sharpness OOTB was outstanding, as well as, the fit and finish. Should you be looking for a petty to add to your tool selection, this should be at or near to the top of the list.
