Not all ceramic rods are the same, and the material quality makes a meaningful difference in how well they work. The CKTG Black Ceramic Honing Rod is built around a higher-grade ceramic rated at 8 on the Mohs hardness scale - harder than most ceramic rods in this price range - with a 2K grit surface that sits in a useful middle ground: aggressive enough to quickly realign and refresh a rolled or fatigued edge, fine enough to leave a sharp, slightly toothy result that performs well in a working kitchen. At 270mm of usable rod length it handles longer blades comfortably, and the straightness of the ceramic is something we paid particular attention to in sourcing this rod. A light, high-impact plastic handle keeps the overall weight down and cleans up easily. A hanging ring at the end of the handle gives you a storage option if a magnetic strip or knife block is not the right fit. The 16mm rod diameter is worth noting - it will not fit in most standard knife block slots, so a leather sheath or magnetic storage is the practical choice for most users.
Ceramic is the right material for maintaining Japanese kitchen knives and any hard steel above 60 HRC. A standard steel honing rod is softer than many of the steels used in Japanese knives - it will not align the edge effectively and can cause micro-chipping over time. To use the rod, plant the tip on a folded towel or cutting board to hold it steady, then draw the edge down the rod at the existing bevel angle using light, consistent pressure. For most Japanese knives that means around 15 degrees per side. A few strokes per side is usually sufficient for regular maintenance. This rod is equally effective on German and French carbon and stainless steel, and several owners use it across a mixed knife roll without any issues.
What Customers Are Saying: Professional cooks and serious home users consistently describe this as the rod that replaced everything else in their kit. Multiple reviewers note it extends the time between full stone sharpenings significantly - owners who previously sharpened weekly find monthly sessions are now sufficient with regular rod maintenance. The edge character gets specific praise: reviewers describe it as sharp with a slight tooth that performs particularly well in a commercial kitchen context where knives are in continuous use. Several users have tested it across an unusually wide range of steels - from soft German stainless to ZDP-189 and SG2 at the hard end - and report it handles the full range effectively. A recurring note is that beginners find it easy to get good results quickly, while experienced knife users appreciate the consistent quality of the ceramic itself.

I have just replaced my old Global ceramic rod with this CKTG ceramic rod and what a difference. My Global rod was rough and did not contribute to a nice knife edge. Your new silky smooth ceramic rod has made all my Japanese knives happy sharp. Thank you CKTG.

I have used this ceramic rod for years and it does put an amazing sharp toothy edge on your blade. Since getting this one I haven't even searched or had a need for another one and the leather cover they sale is nice and keeps it protected. Try it, you won't be disappointed

This rehoned my carbon Japanese steel back to a screaming edge. It also put an edge back on a knife I was sure would need a stone. It's not a finishing steel so I do have stones that could take a blade to a tighter finish.

So I’m like buying the second one because my girlfriend’s moms place has really bad knifes which have rubbish sharpness.. and we all know there is nothing more dangerous than a blunt knife.
So got her one as well as I loved mine so much!

After a year of near daily use (and a little abuse) I started to notice my Tojiro DP wasn't cutting as well and there was faint differences in shimmer on the edge when looking so I decided it was time for either honing or sharpening rod... so glad I got this one! As a total beginner it took six strokes on each side and my Tojiro passed every test... paper, hair and onions cut flawlessly!
I hope I can perfect my technique over time but for anyone debating on what to get you can't go wrong here.

Got this as a lightly used secondhand. Gave it cleaning with soap, sponge and warm water. As a kitchen professional, I have Been using it on knives made of various steels. X50cr15mov, Sandvik 12c27m, shun vg max, vg5, shirogami, 1095, aus8, 4116, chromax, sg2 and zdp189. Very good on already sharp softer steels and the ceramic is fine enough for harder premium steels. Saves a lot of time and helps with postponing the process of setting up a multiple whetsone sharpening session. Highly recommend.

I never thought much of "sharpening rods" but man this thing puts a wicked edge back on my carbon steel Japanese knife! The leather case should come with it but was essential for me as it'll be knocking around in the knife drawer.

This rod brought back the edges on some knives that have been well-maintained but not sharpened in a while. A few light strokes on each side of their blades and they came back to life. All in all, a very satisfying and useful purchase.

I purchased this black ceramic rod based on reviews. It works excellent for its role in the kitchen and it also looks stunning. This is a terrific product though I am now progressing towards whetstones.

CKTG's ceramic honing rod enables me to effectively hone my Japanese, French and German knives. I've used it on my Kikuichi gyuto and santoko, as well as my 40 year old Sabatier carbon chefs knife and Wusthoff stainless knives. Thanks to Mark for his advice and product sourcing.

First, a general comment. Chef Knives To Go offers an outstanding level of customer service. Before making the purchase I had a lot of questions. All were answered in a prompt and helpful manner. The ceramic rod itself is great. I had never used one before. The very helpful videos on the CKTG site and the input provided in the emails got me squared away in short order. The rod is easy to use and does a great job. If this beginner can quickly get a very sharp edge on a dull blade anyone can. No hesitations in recommending CKTG or this ceramic rod!!
