You cannot sharpen what you cannot see - and at the scale of a knife edge, your naked eye cannot see enough. A burr that feels gone under your fingernail is often still there under magnification. An uneven bevel that is producing an asymmetric edge is invisible without a loupe. A scratch pattern that is not polishing out at the right grit is something you diagnose visually, not by feel. The 30x Jewelers Loupe with LED gives you the view you need to understand what is actually happening at the edge rather than guessing. One reviewer who owns 15 of them - and keeps them in his knife case, first aid kits, and workshop - calls it a tool that will revolutionize the way you think about your edges. Another said people at work call him a nut for using one, but none of their knives can slice through paper the way his does.
The LED is the key feature that separates this from a basic loupe - the light shines directly at the edge you are inspecting, illuminating the scratch pattern, the burr formation, and the polish level in a way that ambient light alone cannot. One practical tip from experienced users: hold the loupe so the LED light bounces off the grind textures at an angle rather than shining straight in, which gives better contrast and makes burr detection easier. There is a short learning curve to find the correct focal distance, but once you have it, the view is clear. The true magnification is likely 12-20x rather than a precise 30x - reviewers note the optics are better than budget loupes typically produce at this price, with low off-center distortion and a wide field of view. This is not a precision instrument; it is an accessible, inexpensive tool that makes you a better sharpener.
What Customers Are Saying: Seventeen reviewers have given this loupe a 4.5 star average. The most enthusiastic reviewer owns 15 of them distributed across knife bags and toolkits and says he does not know how he would sharpen without it. Multiple buyers describe it as indispensable for checking burr formation during sharpening sessions and confirming polish quality before finishing. A straight razor user praised the LED for illuminating the edge clearly during post-sharpening inspection. The one lower rating flagged battery drain and a battery compartment that can be difficult to open - worth noting for long-term daily use.
Care Instructions: Wipe the lens clean with a soft cloth. Keep dry and store in a case or pocket when not in use. Replace batteries when the LED dims noticeably. Do not expose to water or harsh chemicals.

Had this one for a few years. It ate battery like Vicodin. The LED would feel dim a week after installing new batteries with limited use. This battery compartment get stuck and the included key is too thin, so it bent when I tried to use it to open the battery compartment.

Checking the edgePosted By: Harry Church - verified customer

I bought this little loupe to check check the edge on my straight razors after sharpening. The light on it helps immensely. A little hard to attain focus until you figure out the correct distance, but definitely worthwhile.

Surprisingly good for the price, off-center distortion is low which is not true of most budget loupes. I doubt that it's really 30x though, 12-15x seems more like it, but plenty enough to see what you need to see. I'd buy another without hesitation, it's a bargain.

Although it is no substitute for an actual microscope, I'm still happy with this acquisition because it fills a need for pocket-sized, ultraportable viewing.I haven't yet analyzed large-sized burrs, but it's shown me some of the bigger microburr whiskers while uncomfortably close. Uncomfortable because my eyeball or face has to be adjacent, an inch or less away, from the sharp edges to get the best possible view with the LED's blinding and tiring blue-light bouncing off the grind textures. I could pair it with the phone camera, but that sort of setup isn't conducive for quick and easy checks; you also don't want to be staring at anything for too long and too close with the LED source switched on.Mild edge-warping aside, the unit's magnification power is definitely better than my trusted Belomo (so the x30 power designation seems about right), but the overall durability of this type of thing is no comparison. Unlike the impressive, heavy-duty Belomo construction, this is Made in China in all ways, so you can't attach it to a daily-use keychain and expect it to remain functioning, or even there, shortly after, i.e., so not designed for field work. The LED light flickers and dims on occasion depending on how you grip the unit, but when you find a sweet spot, it works very well.So far, I've even utilized it in quick electronics' repair, so no buyer's remorse in the least, and a decent additional item to toss into any order, too, if it ever breaks.

Gives a great close up of the blade. There somewhat of a learning curve getting the distance and light on the correct spot but you do get a good look at how well you did sharpening the blade.

For judging edges I like the 60x Mini Microscope (which Mark sold me and might be the same as the 45x) more than my 20x Belomo or my 20x illuminated loupe. Tiny, easy to use, lights not too bright, good field of view.

Man, if I could give this product 10 stars I would! No lie, I have 15 of them. Mine were purchased from Amazon years before Mark got them but I'm so glad he did! Now I have another source of them. I literally don't know how I'd sharpen without this scope. The true magnification is probably 30-ish; is seems like manufacturers of cheap scopes like t his just pull a number out of the air. But the optics are astonishingly clear, especially for the price. The real killer aspect of this is the LED light shining right where you need the it. Brilliant! You can easily see a burr and gauge the amount of polish you have. Do you use the Sharpie trick? This will allow you to see where you're hitting with a level of precision that will increase your diagnostic power exponentially. The downsides? It's kinda cheap feeling. I'd gladly pay $50 for an identical version built like a SureFire or Streamlight. As an FYI, I also keep one of these in my work knife case and at least one in every first aid kit. They're amazing for digging out spinters or seeing debris in someones' eye.Seriously, if you don't have one of these, YOU NEED ONE! This will revolutionize the way you think about your edges.

Great little product for the price. Really lets you get right in there and inspect your knife edge and assess the situation. People at work call me a nut for using a microscope on my knife, but none of theirs can slice through paper like tofu.
