This has become an indispensable tool in my bag. Cleans up most edges much nicer than my german style steel, and has proven sturdy enough to travel with for the 4 years I've had it. Liked it so much that I bought a second one for my house.

My old steel honing rod wasn't working on my hard Japanese knives. First tried a Messermeister Diamond Rod which worked great except the 6-800 grit was too aggressive for light maintenance. I then tried a Chef's Choice Ceramic Rod which was also too aggressive for light maintenance.
This Idahone 1200 ceramic is perfect for frequent, light kitchen maintenance!

This honing rod works very well - I'd like to see another one at 4-5000 grit for a finishing touch!

This thing works great for a quick touch up. A few passes on each side, and you can see the difference. I did some more intensive sharpening on one of my knives the other day, and this thing made it scary sharp.

I use this rod for a quick touch up all my J-knives. Like it so much I gifted one to my brother and my father too, the both loved them. I highly recommend the leather sheath too if your going to store it in a drawer

Nice rod. Great deal for the money. Fine grit used it on my goko gyuto and it works well.

I think the rod is quite nice for its purpose. However I am disappointed to find a nick in the honing surface. If I had been buying it in person I would have inspected it and found another without the flaw. It still does a very nice job on my Shun knife but I have to be careful to miss the nick. I think the quality control should be better.

This thing is great! I use it on softer steel knives like Henckels/Victorinox Forschner and on my harder steel Japanese knives. A few very light passes on each side and my blades come back to paper towel shredding sharpness. What works best for me is to hold the Idahone horizontally, with the tip on the edge of a kitchen countertop. I then hone the blade almost as I would on a sharpening stone.I would rate the Idahone fine at 2K Japanese water stone grit level, maybe even finer - it puts a nice toothy edge on all the steels I've tried thus far.Get the eraser as well - it's inexpensive and it just works.

Great product would be nice if it had one flat side so it dosent roll off table tops. Kind if a bummer to pay $30 and then have to take a sander to your brand new honing rod

This is an amazing deal. A truly great ceramic rod for less than $30? Can't beat it. As for the steel discoloring the rod, you can buy the Ceramic Eraser here for next to nothing and it works great too.

This is a great rod! Aggressive and fast, but not ultra low grit. It is a 1200 Grit, about 20 Microns, and works great. Also handy for pulling the burr off of cheaper steel knives. The steel will discolor the rod, but it will continue to work well.Fast, neat abrasion. And made in America.
