TOJIRO has been crafting high-performance Japanese kitchen knives in Sanjo City for decades, and the CLASSIC line — formerly known as the Tojiro DP — is the range that introduced countless cooks to the world of fine Japanese steel. The knives are unchanged from the DP line. Only the name is new. If you have been researching the Tojiro DP 120mm petty, this is the same knife.
The CLASSIC Petty 120mm is a compact, versatile utility knife that handles smaller slicing tasks, larger peeling work, and any in-between job that falls short of needing a full-size gyuto — Japan's all-purpose chef knife. At 121mm with a 25mm blade height it is light, quick, and easy to control, making it a natural companion to a gyuto or santoku — Japan's three-virtues knife — for everyday prep. The VG-10 stainless core delivers exceptional sharpness and edge retention, the tapered spine and convex grind keep it nimble, and the black micarta handle is durable and comfortable. This is one of the most practical secondary knives in the kitchen.
What Customers Are Saying: Across 18 reviews, customers consistently highlight the value this petty delivers at its price point, with many calling it an essential companion to a larger chef knife. The VG-10 steel earns repeated praise for taking and holding a keen edge — several reviewers note that a light touch-up on stones or a quick strop reveals just how sharp this knife can become. Home cooks and professionals alike appreciate the compact size, with a number of reviewers putting it to work as a paring knife, a detail knife for trimming proteins, and even as a set of impromptu steak knives at the table. A few customers mention that the handle benefits from light sanding to smooth the edges and improve comfort, but the consensus is clear: the steel quality and overall performance make this one of the best entries into Japanese cutlery at any level.
Care Instructions: VG-10 stainless is low maintenance but a few good habits will keep this knife at its best. Hand wash and dry promptly after use and avoid the dishwasher. Sharpen on quality water stones to maintain the fine edge and hone regularly between sharpenings.

I recently read an article in a food magazine that talked about the history of knives going back to the Samurai sword which led me to read more about cooking knives and this website. It was a fun adventure and my two recent purchases have made meal prep a lot easier. Thanks!

Not very sharp out of the box. I really like the size for home use. In the kitchen at work I find it useful as a larger pairing knifebut I mostly keep it home where it's size is more versatile. Seems like good steel but only time will tell.

I use it as a paring knife, my wife uses it as a all around utility knife. She uses the 150mm DP Petty as her main kitchen knife. Would buy again, very useful knife and well made. Sharp enough out of the box but the blade will take a finer edge.Does not fit in the CKTG 5 slim blade guard, the blade is to tall. FYI.

My new go-to knife for poultry and trimming roasts - amazing companion knife for a gyuto/santoku! OOTB edge is surprisingly good, tapering into a convex grind. Decent flat spot for push cutting smaller veg and alliums2000 grit sandpaper on rivets/spine/choil - solves all F&F issues within 5 minutes. The only con I can say is the san mai cladding is really soft and will lose the polished sheen almost immediately. This is purely cosmeticMake no mistake, this is clearly a factory made knife - no one hand polished the handle to smooth out all the rivets, but the price to performance ratio is off the charts

The factory edge is pretty good. Used a ceramic honing rod to dress the edge and it cuts well. I like the blade but I have two issues with the handle. First, I find the handle to be a bit too slender to grip comfortably. Second, there are burrs on the bottom edge of the bolster where it transitions to the heel of the blade and the top edge of the bolster feels a bit sharp where it transitions to the spine of the blade, so using a pinch grip at the bolster is also uncomfortable. I can fix the finish on the bolster but I'd really prefer a heftier handle.

This is the knife for smaller jobs.My wife loves it. Perfect for cutting herbs, and boning smaller proteins. Additionally, Petty knives are an indispensable tool for those who feel uncomfortable wielding a larger chef knife, like my wife, over all 5 stars I like that knife too.

This is my second Tojiro dp knife. The fit and finish is flawless on the knife I recieved. The handles are pretty square on my Tojiro's so a little work with some sandpaper can shape them to your liking if it bothers you. I haven't touched mine. The knife was fairly sharp however I did a little thinning and polished up the edge and this really is now my new favorite knife. It definately will support and hold a keen edge. 5 stars for a great knife at a awesome price.

Takes a wicked edge and cuts great. No rust issues at all and it will be used for cutting veggies and left wet.Relatively thin so a bit of flex in the blade.Handle needs a bit of tweaking to be comfortable (sanding with a bit of wet/dry).A great knife for the price.
