This is a really interesting little knife, and a really useful little knife! Kogatanas are small, handy knives for multi-purpose uses such as cutting, whittling, and some cooks use them as utility knives. Whether you want to cut a piece of trussing string or open that recently arrived package from your favorite knife company (!) this handy little utensil will be there for you.

The opening/closing action is smooth and positive. The wood handle is well finished. The blade is especially noteworthy, being made from the highly regarded Hitachi Blue #2 carbon steel. This is a most unusual choice for such a utilitarian knife, but a very welcome and intriguing one! It is a single bevel blade with a very unusual hammered pattern.

It is difficult to explain the multipurpose nature of the Okeya Folding Kogatana. But once you get your hands on one you will be surprised at how the versatility, strength, and cutting ability of this fun knife results in it being one of your go to kitchen and general home tools.

5  Hard to believe this is a 'factory' knife, September 12, 2020

Though the dimensions are clearly shown it was bigger than I expected. The back edge of the blade is hollow ground so the edge is especially sharp.

The wooden handle feels perfect and locked in your hand.No other man made material can compare to the warm feel you get when holding a wooden handle especially when its done right. It cuts at an angle unlike any other knife I own which makes it perfect for cutting vegetables effortlessly.Be careful when cleaning the blade as it can cut you easily and be sure to add a little dab of cooking oil to the blade after washing to avoid corrosion. Its very tight when opening and closing so you will not be able to single handedly open the knife, two hands will be needed. If you plan on using this as your primary EDC knife just add a lanyard to it and put it in your pocket. Its so light weight that even though its large it does not feel cumbersome or bothersome when carrying it.If you are a knife collector this is a must have as it stands out among the rest.If your looking to buy your first knife then look no further because this knife can handle any task with ease.If you always wanted a custom knife but didn't want to spend the money then consider this knife as you will get a hand crafted uniquely designed pocket folder that has all the warmth and attention to detail a custom knife would have at a very fair price.Truly this is one of the best knives I own.You will not regret buying this knife, you will only regret not buying it sooner as they tend to sell out quickly. This japanese kogatana is elegantly designed and beautifully executed. If you buy this knife you will never need another one.

I have a pocket knife collection, so I had to get this one. Not sure exactly how to describe it. Very different action than most folding knives. The blade, however, is superb (It cut me pretty good). It's the only pocket knife I have with Blue #2 steel, which is cool

I like this knife a lot. Great fit, good finish. There are a couple rough parts I might smooth down a bit near the hinge. I love the look of the knife, especially after I removed the decals and treated the wood with mineral oil.

Great knife to have as a utility tool in the kitchen. I tied a shoelace to it and attach it to my belt loop to pull out of my pocket whenever I need a quick blade.

    5  Surprisingly practical, March 25, 2017

I purchased this knife thinking that it would just be another cool folder that I could add to my EDC. However, it has proven very useful and practical especially in a kitchen. As a right handed user this knife feels like the perfect paring knife. My thumb fits perfectly into the concave side of the knife while my forefinger can rest on the unsharpened part of the blade. It feels so comfortable and I have complete control when working with small veg. prep. On my first day I used this knife for scoring fava beans and I felt like I was flying through them. Out of the box the knife isn't very sharp but once you take it to your stones this thing can get pretty sharp. It sharpens very easily too which I like. Overall I would definitely recommend it to a friend given the price point, its usefulness, and also that sort of "wow" factor when you show it to people. I think the biggest downfall to this knife is the locking mechanism. It feels awkward and slow, but it holds the blade very tightly in place. Other than that, the knife is great. One of my favorites now.

    5  Nice Utility Knife, November 19, 2016

I picked up one of these out of curiosity as I was tired of throwing out utility knife razor blades. Out of the box, the blade seemed to be nicely ground and only required a little bit of honing to finesse the edge. The steel is relatively soft and thus sharpens quickly. Lift the blade on the hone to meet the angle on the beveled face and lay it flat on the non-beveled concave backside. Couldn't be easier.
