The Naniwa Chosera Pro 400 sharpening stone is a favorite among serious users for its speed, durability, and excellent feedback. This coarse sharpening stone is designed for fast stock removal and is ideal when you need to do heavy work on an edge, including chip repair, thinning, and resetting bevels on very dull knives.
In the long-running discussion about top-tier water stones, the Naniwa Chosera Pro line consistently stands out for its balance of cutting speed and control. The 400 grit version is the coarsest in the lineup, offering aggressive cutting action while still maintaining a smooth, predictable feel on the blade that makes it easier to manage than many other coarse sharpening stones.
This sharpening stone is hard, fast cutting, and slow to dish, which helps it maintain a flat surface longer during heavy use. Despite its coarse grit, it provides excellent tactile feedback, allowing you to feel exactly what’s happening at the edge as you work. This makes it a strong choice for both experienced sharpeners and those learning proper technique on a coarse stone.
Like all stones in this series, the Naniwa Chosera Pro 400 is a splash-and-go sharpening stone. Simply wet the surface before use—do not soak, as the resin-bonded construction is not designed for prolonged water exposure.
Stone Size: 210mm x 70mm x 20mm
Care Instructions: Splash-and-go use only. Do not soak. Rinse after use and allow to air dry. Store in a cool, dry place and avoid prolonged exposure to water.
Customer Feedback Summary: Customers consistently praise this sharpening stone for its very fast cutting speed and ability to raise a burr quickly with minimal effort. It’s frequently used for repairing chips, thinning blades, and establishing bevels before progressing to mid- and fine-grit stones. Many reviewers highlight the excellent feedback and smooth feel despite the coarse grit, along with its resistance to loading and slow dishing even after sharpening multiple knives. The splash-and-go convenience is also a major plus, with users noting easy cleanup and minimal prep. Overall, it’s widely regarded as a reliable, high-performance coarse sharpening stone that makes heavy sharpening work efficient and controlled.

I already had the 800 and 3000 grit stones from Naniwa and wanted something a bit coarser to help with thinning and establishing a new primary edge. This stone has been working great.

Very happy, using this then bumping up to a 1k stone followed by the 2k green brick and finishing on the Richmond strop set up. 15-16 knives in and no cupping. Quick to make a fast cutting slurry, quick soak and cleanup in between knives. Super fast shipping, came well packaged and undamaged.

I purchased this stone to use on very dull knives and damaged blades. The feel and feed back of this 400 grit stone is outstanding. I just finished setting the edge and sharpening a brand new inexpensive Chef's knife for my son. I was able to quickly create a burr with the 400, moved on to my Naniwa 800 and then to the Naniwa 3K. I was very pleased (and so was my son)with the quality and sharpness these three stone created on the blade edge. It was a pleasure to use.

This is an excellent stone. It is very aggressive, but smooth, with good feedback. Because of this I only use it to repair damage to a blade or set an edge on a very dull blade. I can then move on to my Chosera 800 and then to the 3K. The combination of these three stones gives me an edge on my Chef Knives that is truly amazing.

See prior review on the naniwa/chosera 2000 grit. As noted, I saved up additional funds over the past month and purchased both the 400 and 800 grit chosera professional. Since I had already sharpened all my knives, I took 4 of my oldest paring knives and dulled the blades on the side of an old Arkansas stone. Starting from scratch, I progressed through the 400 to the 800 and finished on the 2000. After only a few minutes, I had obtained a shave-worthy edge on the paring knives with a mirror finish. Love the splash and go nature of the stones which transcends into an A+ rating on ease of use. Gave all three stones a resounding five star rating.

Bought this stone as a rough grit to a AS kohetsu. Tried it today, and i was impressed how fast it cuts and that the edge that it leaves is not rough at all! I read somethings, and this is a splash and go, so when you buy it, don't soak, it may crack. I recommend it for everyone.Greetings,Tom?s

This stone is a beast. When I first got it, I set bevels and removed chips on over two dozen blades (mostly friends' neglected knives) before I began to notice the dishing. Very hard, cuts fast, dishes slowly. Excellent coarse grit stone, and feels smoother than 400 when you work with it.
