Yoshito Yamakawa makes some really fine knives from his forge at Goko Knives located in Kashiaw City in the Chiba Prefecture. The company has not been long in the knife making business, but in this time they have established themselves among chefs and knife lovers as makers of high performance blades at really competitive prices.

The Goko White #1 Bunka is a great knife for many situations and cooks. Bunka style knives are regarded as general purpose blades adept at cutting and chopping a myriad of ingredients. The blade profile is usually quite flat which is perfect for push cutting and chopping tasks. The characteristic reverse tanto tip allows for delicate work and dexterous handling. The blade is definitely among the more cool lookers out there!

These are very well made knives with great fit and finish. They are made with a very pure carbon steel called White #1 or Shirogami 1. This steel is known for being easy to sharpen, and being able to take highly refined edges. The White #1 core steel is clad in a soft stainless steel to protect the inner core and aid with ease of maintenance. The cladding not only adds strength and durability to the blade, but makes the blade less reactive. Care will still need to be taken to care for the carbon steel core. The outer layer is given a nashiji finish which resembles a pear skin, and aids with food release.

The blade is coupled to a new style handle we are specifying which is made from walnut with a black pakka wood ferrule.

    5  Value for Money, December 12, 2019

My second Goko knife; I see this range as value for money. The heel/choil/tang area is polished for a comfortable pinch grip. The gaps between the handle and tang may be sealed by one of Markís disposable tubes of super glue. Just put a bit of Vaseline on the blade where you donít want the glue to stick, apply glue to the gaps, tap butt of handle to expel air bubbles and keep knife pointing up until the glue dries. Any excess glue may be removed by an emery board for nails after taping areas you donít want scratched.

4  Great knife! Except advertised length was off., July 18, 2019

Just received the knife today. Out of the box is acceptably sharp for sure. Cuts through raw carrot like butter; I canít wait to get it really sharpened up. The finish is good and unique. It has plenty of clearance for chopping. Mine came in with a blade length of 203mm. I very well know this is a handmade knife and dimensions vary, but thought the length over the listed 170mm was worth noting.

Nice stout little bunka with a great OOB edge. Mine had a very nice handle install with no gaps at all where the tang enters the handle. Compares favorably to my coworkers' Masakage Yuki, but I personally prefer the Goko;s handle and slightly flatter, taller profile. It really is just like a Nakiri with a k tip. Service from CKTG was excellent and I received my well packaged knife in 2 days.

Got this knife about two weeks ago and couldnt wait to get it on the board. Out of the box edge was very sharp. Blew through an onion and bell pepper. I love the weight behind the blade, it gives confidence when cutting (in my opinion). This isnt a heavy knife to me but the blade does feel hefty and sturdy when cutting. Taking the edge to 5k makes it scary sharp. Its very easy to sharpen.I would have given it 5 stars but when I got the knife there were gaps on either side of the tang going into the handle. No big deal. I just filled them with some epoxy. I would definitely recommend this blade despite this, If you desire a smaller, do it all kind of knife.
