Yuuka san is a woodblock print artist from Japan. We commissioned her to make these fantastic prints to celebrate our 20th anniversary. This one is of a famous woman samurai warrior named Tomoe Gozen.
Tomoe Gozen was a mythical onna-musha from the late Heian period of Japanese history. She served Minamoto no Yoshinaka during the Genpei War and was a part of the conflict that led to the first shogunate. She was especially accomplished with a bow and Yuuka san decided to depict her here at the moment of releasing an arrow at the enemy.
Yuuka san made 20 numbered prints in all. We took #1 for our office. If you watch the video below you can see her making a small print for demonstration.
