The Sharpal 120N is a dual-grit diamond sharpener built around two monocrystalline diamond surfaces on a full tang stainless steel plate: 220 grit (60 micron) on one face for heavy edge repair, 600 grit (25 micron) on the other for finishing. Diamond abrasive cuts steel mechanically rather than by friction, so it removes material fast on the coarse side and leaves a consistent, even finish on the fine side without the dishing or glazing that wears into oil stones and waterstones over time.
A built in 20 degree angle guide keeps the blade angle consistent stroke to stroke, which matters more on a flat diamond plate than it does on a stone with some give. The plate is rated for dry use, no oil or water required, so it works on lawn mower blades, axes, hatchets, machetes, hedge shears, chisels, and drill bits as readily as it does on a kitchen knife. Full tang construction means the diamond surface is backed by solid steel edge to edge, so there is no flex under pressure on the coarse grit.
Use and Care Instructions: Use dry. Water and oil are not required and can cause the fine iron particles that accumulate on the plate during use to rust if left wet. Wipe the plate clean with a dry cloth after use. Dark residue on the surface is embedded metal filings from sharpening, not diamond wear, and does not affect performance. It can be removed with an eraser or a mild cleaner if desired.
