A butter spreader sounds like a single-use kitchen tool - but spend a week with the Maruyoshi and you will find it in your hand constantly. The thin, flexible stainless blade spreads butter, cream cheese, nut butters, hummus, and any other soft spread with more control and less tearing than a standard knife. The width and length are exactly right for bread work - wide enough to cover a slice efficiently, long enough to reach the edges without awkward angles. The slight flex in the blade lets it follow the surface of bread without pressing down and compressing the crumb. Made in Japan with a stainless steel blade and easy-grip wooden handle. Overall length just over 227mm.
The wooden handle on recent production runs is slightly longer than earlier versions - a small improvement that improves the balance and feel in hand. Nine five-star reviews from customers who discovered the same thing: this is not just a butter spreader, it is a genuinely useful kitchen tool. Works as well for plating and spreading sauces as it does for breakfast prep.
What Customers Are Saying: Nine five-star reviews. The recurring theme is surprise - customers expect a basic butter knife and discover a thin, flexible blade that handles soft spreads with noticeably better control than anything else in their kitchen. One reviewer was converted by a friend who raved about it and now recommends it equally enthusiastically. Multiple reviewers note it is excellent for bread work specifically.
Care Instructions: Hand wash and dry after use. Do not dishwasher - protects both the wooden handle and the blade edge over time.

A friend of mine sung the praises of this little tool, and I was like, "What it's an enlarged butter knife." He responded, "It is not 'just' an enlarged butter knife."
The blade is thin so has give in it. The width and length are an excellent size to work with bread. It spreads evenly. If you're on the fence with this tool, I encourage you to buy it. I was not disappointed.

I figured, why not and I am glad I did. I found I can slice cold butter thin enough with it that un-toasted store bought bread won't tear when also using it to spread. It's steel, not sharp but thin and just flexible enough.

Didn't know I needed this... now that I have it, I use it all the time.

Seriously, you do. It's fantastic. The thin, flexible, wide, curved blade spreads butter beautifully. It doesn't smash or tear bread even when room temp butter is pretty stiff.
It's cheap and you need one in your life.

I saw this and bought it on a whem. Turns out it's a nice stainless steel blade, excellent wood handle that I sanded and oiled, then spray polyed it into a super finish. Now it looks like a restaurant knife at our table! Lots of value and emjoyment for short money at my go to site CKTG!

I was intrigued when I happened on this so thought I'd give it a try. It is unbelievable! The shape works really well but what surprised me was the flexibility of the blade. It is quite flexible when spreading. This makes spreading much easier and consistent. The shape allows the knife to cut easily even though the blade is flexible. The only small quibble I have is: I wish the handle were made of a material that was dishwasher compatible. Not a big deal- I bought 30 more to give as gifts!

This is definitely a winner . The fit and finish are Awesome . The OTB edge is perfect for butter .
You can really tell the thought and craftsmanship that went into this fine piece of cutlery .
I threw all my other butter knives in the garbage . Me and my wife now fight over who gets to spread the
butter every day .I have to hide it from her till I get home from work so she isn't spreading butter all day .I would have given it Five stars , but i had to deduct one because Peanut butter sticks a little too much .Overall it is an Excellent piece . Well worth the cost .
