Sold Out. More soon. Richmond Ultimatum 245mm M390 Steel. We're doing a limited run of these until we can better gauge demand.
BOHLER M390 MICROCLEAN steel is the new super steel on the block. Third generation powder metal technology. Developed for knife blades requiring good corrosion resistance and very high hardness for excellent wear resistance. Chromium, molybdenum, vanadium, and tungsten are added for excellent sharpness and edge retention. Can be polished to an extremely high finish.
After a couple months of using this beast I have to say I’m pretty happy! First, the downsides; I’m a little disappointed in the profile. It doesn’t strike me as very close to the KS is was supposed to be inspired by. That said it does have a pretty long flat spot. While I wish it was flatter with a lower tip the knife is very good overall.
This was probably the sharpest knife OOtB I’ve ever seen (save my Nubatama, and it was not really "stock"- it was sharpened by a Japanese sword polisher prior to being shipped to me). The Ultimatum would cut hanging tissue paper 1.5" out right out of the box! If I didn’t know better I’d think Mark sent me a ringer!
But the really astonishing thing is the edge retention: It’s really without peer in my experience. After three weeks of use on the line, six days a week,it would still cleanly shave my arm! Now,over 2 months later,a few licks on my HA Glass hone and will shave again, albeit not super cleanly. Nothing I’ve used has held an edge remotely this long, again with the possible exception of the Nubatama.
If the profile could be tweaked to more closely mirror the KS I’d sell half a dozen of my knives, buy three more of these and start spending my mad money on guns for awhile!
As it stands, this knife is amazing. The only problem is it pretty much takes the fun out of "the hobby". No more debating steel types and edge retention...this seems to be the last word in that regard! Ultimatum, indeed!
