Coarse grit water stones are appreciated for making easy work of tough chores. Unfortunately, coarse grit stones wear more quickly as a price for shouldering a heavy load. This extra thick Shapton Glass 500 grit stone is double the thickness of the standard 500 grit stone at far less than twice the cost making the 500 grit extra thick a long lasting and cost effective option for anyone building or expanding their sharpening progression. Like the standard thickness 500 grit stone the 500 grit extra thick is a hard precise stone that dishes slowly and cuts quickly. The stone is splash and go so getting started is easy and with less water to keep the stone cutting, cleanup is quick. The Shapton Glass 500 extra thick measures 210mm x 70mm x 10mm, an additional 5mm is added by the glass backing plate the stone is mounted on. The stone comes in a plastic box that works well as a stone holder. See the first photo.

Been looking for a stone on this grit range, was lucky enough this one was back in stock, cuts fast and already used it several times so I'm confident leaving a review, it's a must have if you really need to set a bevel or need a first stone or even second stone in your progression,can't go wrong with this one!!

I use this stone to fix poorly sharpened or damaged knives before moving on to finer grits. I love being able to just splash on water instead of soaking the stone. Excellent when you want to do a bit of work as the mood hits you.

This is an absolute 5/5.The stone is VERY thick and I doubt I will ever be able to tear all of it in this life. It also comes in a box which can be used to hold the stones and even my other Naniwa super stones perfectly. Add to this the black pads under the foot are very adhesive and makes the hole box to almost not move a single bit while sharpening. I use this kit for all my stones and knives and so far it did the job perfectly. 5/5

A great idea at a very good price. The stone is quite suitable when you want a coarser back bevel and intend to do the primary at 800 grit to1500 Grit. Very happy I purchased it, as it is clearly distinct in cut and 'feel' to the coarser 220/320. Occupies it's own 'niche' in the coarse stone world. Fun to use.
