Takeo Murata is regarded as one of Japan’s top knife makers. He lives on Shikoku Island, which is located near Kochi. This area used to be referred to as Tosa, and is known for its Tosagata-style knives and tools. When he was 16 years old, Murata-san began working with his uncle Tokaiji, one of the leading blacksmiths of his generation. He has taken over this mantle and is now a highly regarded knife maker in his own right. The kanji on the knife blade reads “Made by Buhou” which is a reference to his artisan name.
This fine example of his work is made from Aogami #1 high carbon steel. Murata-san has hardened the steel to 61-63 Rockwell and then applied a beautiful kurouchi finish. This black hammer finish aids in ease of maintenance while adding an aesthetic appeal that is hard to resist! The steel is perfectly forged and possesses a fine grain structure. Combined with the a hardness of approximately 63HRC, it results in a blade that can be easily sharpened while holding that edge for extended periods even during heavy use.
The Western style is handle is made from a black pakka wood and is affixed to the full length tang with three stainless rivets. It features a nicely crafted stainless bolster.
