The Kamo R2 petty 150mm is a lovely kitchen knife that features some stunning damascus work and a fit and finish that is as good as it gets. The very talented blacksmith, Kamo-san, works wonders with R2 stainless steel turning it into some beautiful pieces of functional art.

R2 steel is a proprietary powdered alloy made by The Kobelco Steel Company primarily for use in the manufacturing of tools. It is a perfect steel for kitchen knives as it is easy to maintain and can be hardened to a reasonably high ratingóin this case 62-63 HRC. The outer layer of soft stainless steel is applied in layers and then etched to reveal the lovely semi-matte damascus pattern. Because of this 100% stainless construction, there is no need to be concerned with corrosion or discoloration.

One of the outstanding attributes of Kamo knives is their great grinds and out-of-the-box sharpness. The nicely finished spine and choil are well executed and reflect the care and attention that has been devoted to the making of this fine piece of cutlery. The package is completed with a nice octagonal rosewood and buffalo horn handle.

    5  Impressed!, July 7, 2016

I had one of these on loan for a few months, and absolutely loved this little beast.

It was my first experience with an PM steel, and with R2.
Many on the forums had referred to the R2 as a dead steel - lack of character and soul. However, I didn\'t.

It sharpened well, and the edge retention was far better than what I expected.
The fit and finish on the handle was average to good.

The only dislike I had was a personal thing - not a fault of the knife.
The tip on the knife was a bit to curvaceous for me. I found that I prefer a flatter profile.

Those seeking a stainless/PM petty should consider the Kamo R2

One of my top two favorite 150 petties on the site, depending on application. Knife never stops impressing...
