Karaku AS Bunka 170mm Bog Oak is made by a young blacksmith named Michikuni Tokaji, who is part of the Zakuri collective from the Tosa region of Japan.

What sets them apart from other entry-level knives is that they are constructed from Aogami Super Steel. Japanese steels are commonly known by the color that the paper wrapped around the steel happens to be (white, blue, super blue). In this case, super blue steel, also known as Aogami Super Blue. AS steel is considered to be about the best high carbon mix for knife making. Carbon steels can deliver amazing levels of sharpness and Super Blue is regarded to be about as good as it can get. This makes the new Karaku line of knives a particularly interesting and affordable entry into the world of Japanese blades.

This knife comes with a custom made bog oak octagonal with a maple spacer and blackwood ferrule.

Knife was a less expensive and just as good option to the much more pricey knife

Karakus seem to be like Tojiros, but more so. What I mean is that Tojiro is known for having knives of decent steel and heat treat at a relatively low price. The trade off is that fit and finish aren't always there.Karaku uses a much better steel than Tojiro, using AS. The knife came relatively dull, but it took only a few minutes to get it to the point of push cutting newspaper. It performs well, though more of a utility knife than a mini-gyuto.The drawback is the fit and finish. The ferrule is plastic and not flush with the handle. There are machining marks on the blade. If cosmetics are not your main concern, this is a good buy. It would be hard to find an AS petty at a lower price.
