Ikeda-san works from his small blacksmith shop located in Echizen, one of the homes of Japanese knife and sword making. He originally apprenticed under the tutelage of renowned Master Blacksmith Katsushige Anryu. This is the third style of knife we have received from this up and coming smith and it yet again proves that he has learned much from his famous teacher.
There is something quite intriguing about the shape of a bunka. The combination of the reverse tanto-style tip and short, tall blade lend the knife a very purposeful look. These knives are gaining in popularity recently due to their do-it-all abilities. They are adept at cutting, slicing, and chopping, while the tip affords them the ability to take on smaller ingredients and get into tight spaces. They are a good choice for making garnishes and undertaking detail work of all kinds.
Ikeda-san uses the highly regarded Aogami Super alloy as the core steel in his creations. He hardens the steel to a Rockwell rating of about 62, then adds a beautifully applied multi-layer reactive carbon steel, in a damascus style, to increase strength and give lightness to the blade. The damascus is nicely finished and etched in a very subtle way.
The blade is coupled to a really nice octagonal rosewood handle with a black pakka wood ferrule.
