The 4” Shun Classic paring knife is a slightly larger version of the ever popular 3.5” parer. Shun knives are made in Seki City, Japan, by the Kershaw Kai Company. Seki is world famous as the sword center of Japan, with a 700 year tradition of cutlery manufacturing.

Shun Classic knives are made with a VG-10 super steel core encased with 32-layers of Damascus-like stainless steel (16-layers on each side). The Damascus steel supports and protects the core, which increases toughness, and is stain resistant. VG-10 "super steel" is composed of carbon, chromium, cobalt, manganese, molybdenum, silicon, and vanadium. Each Shun Classic knife features a blade angle of 16°.

This knife is a prepper’s dream. It slices through food with consummate ease while avoiding bruising or tearing the delicate produce. Ebony-black pakka wood handles are specifically designed for premium applications. Also featured are stainless steel bolsters and end caps. We recommend hand washing this fine utensil. Includes a lifetime warranty.

    5  Excellent Paring Knife, January 4, 2016

Firstly, I would only recommend this knife to someone who either has hands as large as (or larger, if that's possible) than mine or already owns a 3.5" paring knife and consciously would prefer something slightly larger. That being said, the Shun Classic 4" paring knife is a wonderful piece of kit. It arrives properly sharp and can get sharper yet with only a little coaxing. Like I said earlier, the extra 1/2" length is a blessing for me personally. My previous 3.5" paring knife would nearly disappear under my sausage fingers. The fit and finish is excellent and, I have to add, the QC at Shun seems to be top notch (at least based on this example) because the small choil and spine have a nice little radius on the edge where most other brands leave a burr from machining/cutting. Well done!

My only gripe with this knife is that the handle is a bit small, but what can you expect. It would look and, more importantly, function awful to have this blade attached to the same handle that's on my 240mm gyuto. So, less of a gripe on the knife and more of me complaining of huge hand syndrome.

All in all, I would highly recommend this knife (given the caveats mentioned above) for someone looking for an ever-so-slightly oversized paring knife!

The geometry and length of this blade is only accentuated by is sharpness. If a similar shape was provided in a blue 2 it would be 5 stars and perfection.

Oh baby. I was tempted to try shaving with it when I first held this blade. This little knife is weighted and shaped such that it feels deceptively natural to hold, especially since it is so ridiculously sharp! I think that it will be my new favorite knife.
